What Are Fossil Fuels? How Coal Forms

Answer these questions

  1. What happened to the swamp plants when they died?


  1. What material formed from the layers of decayed plants?


  1. Look at the third stage above. How was coal formed?


Stage 1. Millions of years ago, swamps covered large parts of Earth’s land. When swamp plants died, they sank to the bottom. Stage 2. Layers of decayed plants formed a soft material called peat. Over time the peat was buried under mud and sand. Stage 3. The mud and sand turned to rock. Slowly the peat changed into coal.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

A renewable resource can be produced, grown or replaced after they are used. If humans are careful, this means that we can continue to use these resources over and over again. An example of a renewable resource is wood.

A non-renewable resource is used up quicker than it can be produced, grown or replaced. An example of a non-renewable resource is coal.
